Once you’ve been walking regularly, you may consider increasing your workout for increased calorie burn and stamina, and you wonder, what’s next? Is there a place in your routine for jumping, jogging or running? Let’s take a look at the actual dynamics of jumping, to see if this is something that would work well with your physical fitness routine. Jump training is a specific way of training used by athletes that you may not have considered in your overall exercise plan.
Jumping is a three step process that starts with loading followed by amortization and finally explosion. An athlete wishing to increase their vertical jump ability must consider all these stages in their jump training to make sure that they get the best results out of the exercise. Let us look at these stages closely and how you can exercise to boost your vertical jumping ability.
The first stage: Loading phase – this is the first and most crucial stage of jumping. For a good jump, you have to load your muscles properly. A good loading time is essential, this part should not be a problem at all because gravity helps a lot in it. Exercises that aim at increasing your loading process are often weight exercises that strengthen the muscles as well as making them more agile and flexible.
The second stage: Amortization phase – the significance of this stage is just as important as the loading stage. Some jump training programs refer to this stage as a determinant of how high the body will be propelled by the next stage. This stage is when you are shifting from the downward gravity assisted loading stage to the final explosion stage. The shorter the amortization time, the greater your vertical jump will be. This stage is mainly about coordination and exercises will focus on increasing muscular coordination and response.
The third and final stage: Explosion phase –your plyometric workouts will mainly concentrate on this stage. As the name suggests, this is the part where most muscle power, energy and speed is required to explode with full intensity to catapult the body as high as possible. Most exercises focus on this stage because it is largely the determinant of the height your body will be propelled upwards. As you get set to train to increase your vertical jump, train for all the three stages.
Has this inspired the inner atlete in you? See any potential on the basketball court or volleyball court? Good luck with your exercise routine!
